Modified Carbapenem Inactivation Method for Phenotypic Detection of Carbapenemase Production among Enterobacteriaceae.

The ability of clinical microbiology laboratories to reliably detect carbapenemase-producing carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CP-CRE) is an important element of the effort to prevent and contain the spread of these pathogens and an integral part of antimicrobial stewardship. All existing methods have limitations. A new, straightforward, inexpensive, and specific phenotypic method for th...

Retrospective and prospective evaluation of the Carbapenem inactivation method for the detection of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae

BACKGROUND There is an urgent need for accurate and rapid diagnostic tests to identify carbapenemase producing enterobacteria (CPE). Here, we have evaluated the Carbapenem Inactivation Method (CIM) test to detect CPEs from cultured colonies. METHODS A total of 256 enterobacterial isolates were used to evaluate the performance of the CIM in comparison to Carba NP test and molecular detection u...

Rapid detection of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae from blood cultures.

The biochemical-based Carba NP test has been evaluated to detect carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (n = 193) directly from spiked blood cultures. It was able to rapidly detect KPC (n = 50), IMP (n = 27), VIM (n = 37), NDM (n = 33) and OXA-48-like producers (n = 46) with sensitivity and specificity of 97.9% and 100%, respectively. This cost-effective technique may be implemented in any ...

Carbapenem Inactivation Method: Accurate Detection and Easy Interpretation of Carbapenemase Production in Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas spp

Background: We evaluated the carbapenem inactivation method (CIM) compared with the modified Hodge test (MHT) for the detection of carbapenemase-producing Gram-negative bacilli. Methods: A total of 61 isolates of carbapenemaseproducing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE: 14 KPC, 7 GES5, 8 NDM-1, 9 VIM-2, 9 IMP-1, and 14 OXA-48-like), 34 isolates of metallo-β-lactamase (MBL)-producing Pseudomonas spp. (14 ...
